Matt and Rich's Desert Adventure

We finished off the day in White Cliffs with wine and a desert sunset on top of the roof of our underground hotel room.

We spent the afternoon 'noodling' but didn't have much luck finding a fortune. Just a few stray chips of opal were all we could muster.

The place was full of characters. This is Mick - a one eyed miner who showed us around his place. He has a pet dog, as well as a goat and pig that think they are dogs. Strange but true.

Seriously. There are no windows and all the rooms are just painted rock walls. It is the only way to stay cool out there. If you need a bigger house, you just dig an extra room!

We checked in to our room in 'The Underground Hotel'.

White Cliff's is a remote opal mining town. It's a strange but interesting place where people live underground.

Narrowly avoiding an emu as we drive up to White Cliffs. It just shot out in front of the car and ran across the road as fast as it could.

A sculpture park just outside Broken Hill. Matt looking mystic just before we were attacked by a swarm of flies.

In the middle of nowhere. On a hill overlooking Mundi Mundi plains. It's the last hill for a long long time.

Silverton Hotel. A dusty old town on the outskirts of Broken Hill. There's only a pub and a few old buildings left.

Tackorama! The trip was already beginning to resemble the movie 'Priscilla, Queen of the desert'. So we decided to go one step further and stay in the same Broken Hill hotel they did in the movie.

We left the sealed roads behind and headed into the red dust and into the real outback.

We figured we needed to let loose before heading off to Broken Hill and into the real outback.

So we hit the town hard and partied.

At home in our city pad. Danika's mum donated her townhouse in Adelaide's restaurant and nightclub district to us for the weekend.

Rich found a new friend along the way.

Time for another photo stop - on what is supposed to be Australia's longest jetty.

Two days were enough in the Flinders Ranges - (the mountains behind Matt). We decided we needed the city again. We took the coast road back to Adelaide, stopping off along the way.

The spiders, flys, wasps and sound of snakes becomes too much for Matt to bear.

Again, it was really hot. But it was a nice area to walk in with great views. We saw a few kangaroos and many other creepy crawlies.

We ended up in the town of Melrose at the base of Mount Remarkable. So we put on our walking shoes and started climbing.

After some more beach visits, we decided to pack up our tent and head north to the Flinders Ranges for some bushwalking!

Rich tries to impress Matt with his rowing skills. It didn't work.

A perfect place and way to while away the day.

Our trip to Mannum was one of the highlights. We had a great bbq on the water's edge and just sat back, ate, drank and relaxed.

Matt was happy to take a more laid-back approach.

Rich decides to take his life into his own hands and head out for a kayaking adventure.

The house is in the middle of nowhere with only two other holiday homes in the area. It's surrounded by huge trees and is the perfect getaway.

For something different, we swapped the beach for the Murray River. Danika's mum has a great summer house right on the water. It had Matt swinging from the trees!

Matt soaks up the sun on a secluded long sandy beach. It was hard geting him back in the car for the next adventure.

Basing ourselves in Adelaide, we'd head off every morning to somewhere new. This was the great sandy beach at Goolwa where the Murray River meets the sea.

In the evenings, it was back to Danika's great house in the hills for lots of barbies and relaxing.

For the next week we indulge in sun, surf and the great summer weather. Adelaide was baking in 40 degree temperatures. So there were plenty of days at the beach.

After 5 days of driving the road trip arrives in Adelaide and Matt and Rich catch up with Danika for more wine.

After a boozy lunch there wasn't much else to do except sit and enjoy the view.

Matt sampling a drop or two in the Barossa Valley.

As we got closer to Adelaide, we also got closer to the wineries. Like the cheap lushes we are, we stopped at almost all of them and loaded up with cheap wine. First stop.. Banrock Station.

Another view of Lake Bonney at night. No sign of a full moon yet.

And this is why Matt wanted that 'golden brown look'. After jumping off the jetty into Lake Bonney, Matt struggles with a wardrobe malfunction.

You get the idea...

The weather was baking hot and Matt took every opportunity to work on his sun tan.

We drove thousands of kilometres and our only plan was to end up in Adelaide at some stage. We stopped at many random towns along the way to blend in with the locals.

The accommodation was first class all the way.

There were plenty of action packed adventures along the way, including 'The Big Orange'.

First stop was a quick overnight stay in Canberra to visit Rich's parents. Then Matt took the wheel for a hair raising trip through country New South Wales.

Road Trip

With 3 weeks off work, Matt and Rich decide to load up the car and head-off on a road trip into the outback.
